We offer a seal kit for the hydraulic cylinders for SLK R171 models.
A lot of Mercedes cabriolet owners are aware of the well known problem: After a while the hydraulic cylinders responsible for opening and closing the soft top start leaking and do not work properly anymore.
The leak occurs due to the materials from which both the original o-rings as well as the rod seals within the hydraulic cylinders are made of. These materials are limited in terms of temperature and wear resistance. This is especially noticeable during the summer, when the vehicle is outside and the soft top is opened, the hydraulic cylinders are heated not only by the outside temperature, but also by the pressure in the hydraulic cylinder, as compressed materials generally heat up. This means that leaks in the hydraulic cylinders with the original installed seals occur very quickly, especially at high temperatures.
For this reason we have the rod seals manufactured from affordable polyurethane (AU, red color) as well as heat and wear resistant Viton (FPM/FKM, brown color). Viton has the same mechanical properties as polyurethane, but has a far greater temperature resistance (from -20°C/-4°F to +204°C/+400°F). The rod seals are CNC-milled to our specification in Germany within tolerance class DIN ISO 2768-1-m to ensure a high level of accuracy.
A hydraulic cylinder contains a rod seal, an o-ring (depending on the model, not always installed) and a one- or two-piece piston seal (depending on the model). If you want to completely overhaul a hydraulic cylinder, you need the rod seal kit and the piston seal kit.
Attention: Although the seals we offer have a high temperature range, they may only be used with the following types of hydraulic fluid to ensure smooth operation and a long service life:
- Hydraulic fluids in accordance with standard DIN 51 524, HLP 32 or standard ISO 11158, HM 32 (most hydraulic fluids adhere to this standard)
Attention: The seal kits are referenced with the part number of the original hydraulic cylinder. Please make sure these match before you purchase a seal kit.
