Convertible top hydraulic cylinder repair kit Mercedes 1718000072 - shaft collar

We offer a repair kit for the top hydraulic cylinder A1718000072 / 1718000072 / 171 800 0072 (front lock cylinder) used in Mercedes model SLK R170. This repair kit includes the shaft collar that is needed to reattach the piston rod to the rod mount.

The shaft collar and the set screws are made out of 1.4404 / V4A / AISI 316L stainless steel that has superior corrosion resistance compared to standard V2A stainless steel. The metal parts are CNC-milled to our specification in Germany within tolerance class DIN ISO 2768-1-m to ensure a high level of accuracy.

Installation instructions:

- Removing the old shaft collar: Remove the snap ring at the end of the hydraulic cylinder where the piston rod exits the cylinder housing by prying it out. After than, the piston rod can be taken out of the cylinder. The factory shaft collar that is used to attach the piston rod to the rod mount is staked into place. Use a 3mm/3.5mm metal drill bit to drill out the staking on both sides of the old shaft collar (we recommend using a drill bit specifically made for hardened steel). After the staking is drilled out completely, remove the old shaft collar and pull the piston rod out of the rod mount. Proceed to remove the old rod seal and install our new seal (see our Installation guidelines for more details).

- Installing the new shaft collar: Push the piston rod into the rod mount and hold it there. Take the new shaft collar (without the set screws) and push it onto the end of the piston rod until it is fully seated. Now you can insert both set screws and screw them in using a 2mm hex bit, alternating between the two screws in the process to apply even pressure from both sides (tightening torque: 1.7 Nm / 15 in-lb). It is very important that you push the shaft collar down against the rod mount during the entire process in order to guarantee a tight fit. After ensuring that the shaft collar is positioned tight against the rod mount, you can insert the piston head into the cylinder and reinstall the snap ring.

Attention: Although the seals we offer have a high temperature range, they may only be used with the following types of hydraulic fluid to ensure smooth operation and a long service life:
- Genuine Mercedes Benz hydraulic fluid MB 343.0, hydraulic fluids in accordance with standard DIN 51 524, HLP 32 or standard ISO 11158, HM 32
Attention: The seal kits are referenced with the part number of the original hydraulic cylinder. Please make sure these match before you purchase a seal kit.
